The Benefits of Mindfulness in Tea Drinking

Mindful eating and drinking are ancient values in oriental culture. However, the stresses of modern life make these ancient values more important than ever. Over-consumption, and fast-consumption are common pitfalls in our day-to-day, and this is largely due to stress, and the multi-tasking lifestyle this century seems to call for.

There are many reasons to slow down, it allows for a deeper focus and appreciation, better enjoyment, and decreases stress levels. At ZENS, we believe in small changes. We look to tea as a process that not only refreshes our bodies, but also slows our minds. The process of brewing tea called Gong Fu Cha, embraces the slowing of time, the reflection of self, and the escape.

The method of brewing Gong Fu Cha, calls upon the various human senses at every step. Observe, touch, smell, and taste. It is as much about drinking tea as it is about the brewing. By focussing your 5 senses on tea, you are already beginning the process of reflection and escape. Putting a distance between you and your current stresses so that you can eventually bring your focus back to self, and the moment.

Next time you sit down for a cup of tea, pay attention to the leaves, appreciate its colour, and take note of its smell. If you are with friends discuss its aroma, ponder its origins, the degree of fermentation and roast. Admire how the leaves transform before the brew and after. Do the leaves puff up after they have been soaked? Does the colour change?

This highly engaged process of drinking tea aims to help you achieve the slowing of time, and to reap the benefits that come with that.
